The semiconductor industry will need to hire an additional 1 million employees by 2030, according to a report by Deloitte. Currently, the sector employs roughly 2 million people worldwide and is already finding it hard to attract all the talent it needs. The shortage will be exacerbated by a race to localize semiconductor manufacturing, writes the consultancy company. Next to tech workers, fab construction will require a range of skills in construction, factory automation, and so on.

“Besides skill development, the chip industry may need to join hands with the various local governments to enhance fungibility and mobility of skills between regions, secure support in the form of favorable talent immigration policies and seek assistance for local recruitment and skills-based training. Further, after years of M&A activity and consolidation, many companies may need to find a better way to integrate the various talent workforces,” Deloitte writes.
