The Netherlands has reclaimed fourth place in the World Competitiveness Ranking, published yearly by the Swiss business school IMD. Last year, it dropped two spots to number six. Singapore held on to the top spot, while Denmark rose six places to claim the runner-up position. Moving up one place, Switzerland completes the top three. Remarkably, the United States barely managed to remain in the top ten, after ranking third in 2019.

Among the Netherlands’ strong points are its position in international trade, its labor market and its technological infrastructure. Price levels and taxation drag the score down. The scientific infrastructure rank (13) is relatively low compared to the overall rank. The report notes that increased focus on R&D, particularly for key enabling technologies, is one of this year’s major challenges.

Like the Netherlands, Belgium rose two places, to 27.
