Dutch political party D66 calls for a European Commissioner for Technology, overseeing the implementation of a common European tech strategy. In addition, revision of industrial policy, creation of a single European digital market and a 50 billion euro investment in key technologies are needed to be able to keep up with China and the United States. “If we don’t do anything Europe will gradually lose its status as an economic superpower,” argues D66 in a vision document (link in Dutch).

Five technologies, in particular, are in need of a boost, according to the plan: artificial intelligence, quantum computing, cybersecurity, space travel and digital infrastructure. D66 proposes Eindhoven as an excellent location for a European Institute for Artificial Intelligence, with a mission to drive industrial AI activities throughout Europe.
