Multiple bids on Belgan foundry
Belgan, the Flemish power semiconductor foundry that filed for bankruptcy last month, has received bids from several investors. The interested parties include the former Chinese owners, Belgian entrepreneur Guido Dumarey and a Swedish-Finnish consortium operating as 7 Semiconductors, according to Swedish media outlet Elektronik Tidningen (link in Swedish).
As a former site of US firm Onsemi, Belgan tried to reinvent itself as a gallium nitride (GaN) foundry in 2022 to capitalize on the growing momentum of this material in power semiconductors, particularly for automotive applications. Compared to silicon carbide (SiC), another up-and-coming power semiconductor material, GaN performs better at high frequencies but at lower power.
