Nvidia and AMD both eye Arm-based CPUs
Nvidia and AMD are joining Qualcomm in designing Arm-based processors for PCs running Microsoft’s Windows operating system, Reuters reports. Microsoft tapped Qualcomm as early as 2016 to develop Windows-compatible Arm CPUs. The San Diego-headquartered fabless was granted exclusivity until 2024, and the software giant has been encouraging other companies to enter the market as well, the report states. Microsoft executives have seen how Apple’s switch from X86 to Arm silicon has yielded performance and power-use benefits.
