“Samsung scales down foundry operations”
Samsung plans to shut down over half of its foundry production capacity by the end of the year, according to a report from the Chosun Daily. The Korean chipmaker has poured billions of dollars into the contract manufacturing division but so far hasn’t managed to attract major customers. Reportedly, the firm has already deactivated over 30 percent of its 4nm, 5nm and 7nm production lines due to low utilization rates and weak orders. Samsung doesn’t report the foundry’s financial results, but analysts estimate the Q3 loss alone amounted to over 650 million euros.
