Thales and UvA (re)join ESI
As of this year, Thales and the University of Amsterdam (UvA) are part of the partner board of ESI, the embedded systems joint innovation center of the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). The Hengelo-based defense specialist was involved before, UvA is a new member. They join ASML, Canon Production Printing, Nexperia, Philips, Thermo Fisher Scientific, TNO and the universities of Delft, Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Twente. Applying the latest scientific insights, ESI develops methodologies and tooling for building complex high-tech systems. These methodologies are tested and validated in practice on site at the partners.
Participation in ESI is of added value particularly for the development of systems for the navy, comments Roel Aalbers, Technical Director Systems at Thales Naval. “From Naval, we’ve had excellent collaboration with ESI in several research projects in recent years. With the renewed accession to the partner council, the institute’s knowledge, experience and ecosystem will be used to further strengthen our innovative position.”
For the past year, ESI senior researcher Benny Akesson has been a professor by special appointment within UvA’s Parallel Computing Systems (PCS) research group, where he holds the chair “Design methodologies for cyber-physical systems.” Professor and PCS chairman Andy Pimentel sees many opportunities for cross-fertilization and cross-learning. For example, his group brings in new expertise in analyzing and optimizing extra-functional behavior such as performance, energy consumption and reliability. Pimentel: “With this partnership, we hope to further strengthen the industrial cooperation of the PCS group.”
