Three AI projects awarded a Vidi grant
The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded Vidi grants to 85 researchers from different domains. The lucky receive 800,000 euros to develop their own innovative line of research and set up their own research group. Among them are three AI-related projects, led by Tim van Erven (Leiden University), Jan van Gemert (Delft University of Technology) and Johannes Schmidt-Hieber (University of Twente), respectively.
Van Erven plans to develop new AI methods that automatically adapt to the learning task in order to learn faster. Van Gemert aims to add innate knowledge to deep learning, as what is built in no longer has to be learned, thus saving valuable training data. Schmidt-Hieber is looking into deep learning as well, to find out why this method works often so well in applications. With his project, he wants to take a first step towards building a mathematical theory analyzing the statistical properties of deep neural networks.
