TNO sets up shop in Twente
Twente is the last Dutch high-tech region to get a branch of TNO. Together with the University of Twente (UT), the research organization is establishing three joint research centers, focused on photonic chips, medical technology and digital systems for predicting maintenance of civil infrastructure. In time, 40-50 people are expected to be employed there. The province of Overijssel is contributing 1.5 million euros to the collaboration and the Twente Board has set aside the same amount to support projects that arise from it.
TNO isn’t the first research organization to land on the UT campus. In 2017, the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology (IPT) established a project center in Twente. The Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Advanced Manufacturing at the University of Twente (FIP-AM@UT) works together with the manufacturing industry on innovative manufacturing solutions. Today, the center is located opposite the campus and employs more than twenty people.
