European firms captured 6 percent of global IC sales last year, according to data released by IC Insights. That’s down from 9 percent in 1990. Japanese companies, which also claim a 6 percent market share at the moment, experienced a much steeper a decline, having captured almost half of the IC market over thirty years ago. By contrast, US and Asian IC suppliers have seen their shares climb since 1990. The share of the US increased from 38 to 54 percent, while that of the Asia-Pacific surged from 4 percent in 1990 tot 34 percent in 2021. Chinese firms still only hold 4 percent of global market share, mostly from fabless activities.
