Working together with Dutch research institute Qutech, Intel has developed integrated control electronics for quantum computers. The Horse Ridge system-on-chip takes qubit control into the cryogenic environment where the qubits reside. This simplifies the control system considerably, facilitating scale-up of the number of qubits and improving overall performance.

Even today’s primitive quantum computers have hundreds of cables running in and out of them, connecting ‘on-site’ electronics in the cryogenic refrigerator with their control systems. This setup obviously is impossible to scale up beyond a certain point, if only for the interference in which it would result.
