Intel reportedly has selected the German city of Magdeburg to build the European fab it has been alluding to since last year. The chip manufacturer will unveil the location next week, German broadcaster MDR reports. Intel chose the centrally located city over two other German sites in Dresden and Bavaria. France, Italy and the Benelux countries had been mentioned as possible hosts as well.
While still unconfirmed, it was expected that Intel would make an announcement about the fab’s location soon after the European Commission presented the European Chips Act. One of this proposal’s principal components is the relaxation of state-aid rules for the specific purpose of bolstering Europe’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. Until now, state support for anything else than pre-competitive activities has been strictly forbidden.
