Japan plans to invite TSMC and other global chipmakers to build an advanced fab together with domestic semiconductors companies, the Yomiuri newspaper reported Sunday. Citing national security concerns, the Japanese government wants to boost its dwindling Japanese semiconductor industry. A TSMC spokesperson told Reuters that there is no concrete plan on the table at the moment, but said the company does not rule out the possibility.
In May, TSMC announced its intention to construct a 12 billion dollar 5nm fab in Arizona – its first advanced fab outside Taiwan. The foundry is currently negotiating with state and federal governments about receiving investment incentives. Bloomberg reported last month that an agreement has been hammered out, but no official announcement has been made yet.
