The Amsterdam-based public lighting and smart city experts of Lightwell are teaming up with the city of Rotterdam to reimagine space use in urban areas. Sharing the ambition for more connected and eco-friendly cities, the duo pulled back the curtain on their collaborative project known as CENT-R (City/Connected Energy Network Tool Rotterdam) – a street-side, ‘smart’ lamppost with an eye toward emerging technologies.

With the highly anticipated rollout of the 5G network, as well as the energy transition and the need for EV vehicle charging, urban planners are scrambling to figure out how to fit in all the necessary infrastructure upgrades. Enter the CENT-R open platform. Other than their primary purpose of providing light in the city center, the modular posts can be fitted with any number of systems or equipment. For example, environmental sensors, telecom antennas and 5G cells, EV charging outlets, as well as parking pay stations.
