Germany and eight other European countries are working on setting up a second battery cell manufacturing and recycling consortium, German economy minister Peter Altmaier confirmed in Handelsblatt. According to the newspaper, BMW, BASF and Varta are among the companies participating in the initiative.
Battery cell production is high on the agendas in Brussels, Berlin and other European capitals. Seen as a key technology, relevant projects are eligible to get ‘Important Project of Common European Interest’ status, meaning state support rules are relaxed.
Earlier this year, France and Germany started the first battery cell consortium, in which carmaker PSA and its German subsidiary Open and French battery maker Saft participate.
