Location technology specialist Tomtom announced details on its latest fully autonomous test vehicle. The car was designed to test and improve the company’s autonomous driving technologies.
The vehicle has eight laser scanners, stereo cameras and six radars. The sensors provide a 360-degree view of the surroundings. Their output is processed and referenced against Tomtom’s HD Map, so the car can precisely determine its location. HD Map is a highly accurate and attributed representation of the road, with accuracy down to a few centimeters.
Tomtom’s head of autonomous driving Willem Strijbosch states that having their own autonomous vehicle is a critical advantage for developing the technology required for safe and comfortable autonomous driving. He expects Tomtom can now move even faster in their research and product development.
