Robin brings Scarecrow into its nest for airport bird control
Bird detection and classification expert Robin Radar Systems has announced the acquisition of bio-acoustic bird-control specialist Scarecrow Group. By joining forces, the two sides are looking to integrate their detection and dispersal technologies to develop a comprehensive solution. Discussions for the merger started last year when it was discovered that mutual customers commonly worked with two tablets alongside one another, for the most effective detection, logging, and dispersal of birds at airports. While the total cost of the acquisition is unknown, the agreement was finalized on 9 June 2021.
Since the 80s, Robin has been working to deliver airport customers with actionable information with its radar systems. To do this, the Hague-based company has developed special software algorithms and radars that work 24/7 to detect, classify and organize detailed data and help build customized and effective wildlife management policies. Around the same time, in 1984, Scarecrow started making a name for itself by delivering sophisticated and humane bio-acoustic technology for bird dispersal. It relies on its unique database of bird distress calls, the largest in the world, to imitate evolutionary communication sounds used by birds to warn each other – effectively instructing birds to leave certain areas.
With this merger, Robin is looking to integrate this bio-acoustic technology with its purpose-built radars, to make an all-in-one radar solution that is specially tuned for the detection of birds and drones in airspace. “Having known Robin for quite a few years, through shared customers and both companies’ attendance at Bird Strike conferences, it felt like a natural fit to join forces,” says Lee Pannett, Managing Director of Scarecrow. “Especially, because we have the same vision and ambition to make bird control at airports more proactive, enhancing awareness of wildlife activity both on and off the airfield.”
