First EUV-chip powered smartphone on pre-order now
Wednesday, Samsung launched the Galaxy Note10 and Galaxy Note10+ smartphones, the first in the world to be powered by a processor that was fabbed using ASML’s EUV scanners. Both phones will hit the shelves on 23 August, but are already on pre-order.
The octa-core processor dubbed the Exynos 9825 is made with Samsung’s 7nm process, which went into volume production earlier this year. It appears to be largely the same chip as its predecessor, the 8nm Exynos 9820 chipset, though the shrink made possible by EUV yields some performance and power efficiency enhancements.
The next ‘EUV smartphone’ to go on sale is likely Huawei’s Mate 30 smartphone, to be launched in October if the historical release schedule is honored (trade tensions may prompt changes). The Mate’s Kirin 985 processor is manufactured using TSMC’s EUV-upgraded 7nm technology called 7nm+.
