TSMC is set to kick off 5nm chip production in April, reports Digitimes. According to the news outlet, the next IC generation is in high demand too. Typically, companies such as Apple and Huawei are the first adopters of new IC technology, but it’s unknown which companies booked the first production runs. Digitimes does mention Mediatek, which is ramping up 5G handset chips despite a severe drop in handsets shipment in China due to the virus outbreak. Samsung, TSMC’s only competitor in the foundry space, is also expected to start 5nm production in the first half of 2020.
