China tightens grip on rare-earth mining
China is clamping down on its domestic rare-earth supply chain. “No organization or individual may encroach upon or destroy rare-earth resources,” said a document published Saturday, aiming to “ensure national resource security and industrial security.” Rare earth resources already belong to the state, but the introduction of the new policy sends a signal to the mining sector, which sees a lot of underground activity. Beijing needs tight controls because it wants to weaponize rare earths in the trade war with the US.
