The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking has selected the Surf site at the Amsterdam Science Park to host one of two ‘European’ quantum computers based on semiconductor spin qubits. The system with at least 16 physical qubits will be integrated with the Snellius supercomputer, allowing for quantum acceleration of specific computational tasks.

The EuroHPC JU co-funds up to half of the cost of a quantum computer, with a maximum of 20 million euros. So far, five projects in five different countries and covering different quantum technologies have been approved, including the one in Luxembourg, which also focuses on semiconductor spin qubits. In addition, two analog quantum simulators procured are currently being installed in France and Germany.

The EuroSSQ-HPC consortium that will operate the quantum computer in Amsterdam consists of Surf, Quantum Delta NL, the University of Antwerpen, GENCI (France), Netherlands eScience Center, Leiden University, Delft University of Technology and the National Institute of Subatomic Physics (Nikhef).
