Dutch electronics community recognizes scaling efforts in photonics
The efforts of TUE researcher Yi Wang to miniaturize photonic integrated circuits have been recognized with the Else Kooi Award.
For anyone with a background in integrated photonics looking to start a PhD position, Eindhoven University of Technology (TUE) will be high on their list. Illustrating its pioneering role in the development of the technology, TUE is among the first hits in a Google search. But that’s not the only reason why Yi Wang decided to kick off his scientific career there. Being allowed to enter the cleanroom and engage in fabrication himself is what tipped the scales. Only a handful of top institutions would allow that.
The hands-on experience has served Yi well. “It’s really made a difference in my work. It’s wonderful to have the freedom to explore different avenues and innovate on all aspects of the design. That’s why we’re able to fabricate such excellent components in Eindhoven.” Excellent, indeed: Yi and collaborators have created multiple components that claimed world record performance.
